Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is a medical condition characterized by the enlargement of breast tissue in males. It results in the appearance of breasts that may be swollen or larger than normal.

This condition can affect one or both breasts and can occur in males of any age, from infants to elderly individuals. Gynecomastia is typically caused by an imbalance between the hormones estrogen and testosterone in the body.

Several factors can contribute to the development of gynecomastia
  • Hormonal Changes: During puberty, there can be a temporary hormonal imbalance that leads to breast tissue enlargement in some boys. Similarly, hormonal changes in older men can also result in gynecomastia.
  • Medications: Certain medications, such as some anti-androgens, anabolic steroids, certain anti-depressants, and some cancer treatments, can cause gynecomastia as a side effect.
  • Health Conditions: Certain health conditions, such as liver disease, kidney disease, and hormone-producing tumors, can lead to hormonal imbalances that cause gynecomastia.
  • Lifestyle Factors: Alcohol and drug use, as well as the use of certain herbal products, can contribute to gynecomastia.

Techniques used in Gynecomastia operation

Liposuction Technique

Liposuction Alone: If the breast enlargement is primarily due to excess fatty tissue, liposuction may be used as a standalone technique. Small incisions are made, and a thin tube (cannula) is inserted to suction out the excess fat.

Excision Technique

  • Glandular Excision: When gynecomastia involves a significant amount of glandular tissue, direct excision is necessary. This technique involves making an incision near the areola (the darker skin around the nipple) to remove the excess glandular tissue. This method is often combined with liposuction for optimal results.
  • Combination Technique: In many cases, a combination of liposuction and glandular excision is used to achieve the best results. Liposuction is used to remove fatty tissue, and excision is used to remove glandular tissue.

Medications

In some cases, medications may be prescribed to address the hormonal imbalances causing gynecomastia. These medications might include anti-estrogens or medications that modulate hormone production. However, the effectiveness of these medications can vary, and they are generally more suitable for cases caused by specific medical conditions or medications.

There are several non-surgical methods to treat gynecomastia in men, such as the use of exercise, and following a healthy diet. However, these methods do not work for all cases. That is why the surgery of removing gynecomastia is an effective and rapid solution. The choice of technique depends on the specific characteristics of each patient’s gynecomastia. A qualified plastic surgeon will assess the individual’s condition, discuss their goals and preferences, and recommend the most suitable technique or combination of techniques.
